West Africa’s First Robotic Fibroid Surgery: Adamawa-Born Specialist Leads Historic Medical Breakthrough

Nigeria has recorded a major milestone in advanced healthcare delivery following the successful performance of what is being described as West Africa’s first robotic-assisted fibroid removal surgery.

The groundbreaking procedure was led by Dr. Ahmed Abdullahi, an indigene of Numan Local Government Area of Adamawa State, who carried out a robotic-assisted laparoscopic myomectomy on January 30, 2026, at Nisa Premier Hospital.

The surgery was performed using the advanced Microport Toumai MT-1000, a high-precision robotic platform designed to enhance surgical accuracy, reduce complications and improve recovery outcomes.

The patient, a 22-year-old woman diagnosed with uterine fibroids through ultrasound imaging, opted for the robotic procedure as a minimally invasive alternative to conventional open surgery. The operation was completed with minimal blood loss and required no transfusion.

Unlike traditional fibroid surgery, which often involves larger incisions and longer hospital stays, the robotic-assisted approach relied on tiny, precise cuts, significantly reducing tissue trauma. The patient was discharged just hours after the procedure, reporting only mild discomfort and demonstrating rapid recovery.

Speaking after the operation, Dr. Abdullahi highlighted the advantages of robotic-assisted surgery, noting that the technology provides enhanced three-dimensional visualisation, improved dexterity and greater precision, enabling surgeons to perform complex procedures with reduced surgical error and faster healing time.

He was assisted by Dr. David Ejenobo, a consultant gynaecologist at Nisa Premier Hospital, whose collaboration ensured the smooth execution of the procedure.

The milestone was achieved through a partnership between Nisa Premier Hospital and RoboMed Global, reflecting growing collaboration between international medical technology innovators and Nigerian healthcare providers.

Chief Executive Officer of RoboMed Global, Dr. Obi Ekwenna, described the successful surgery as a watershed moment for women’s healthcare in West Africa, reaffirming the organisation’s commitment to expanding robotic surgical infrastructure and strengthening local capacity through specialised training and technology transfer.

Medical experts note that robotic surgery is particularly effective in treating conditions such as fibroids, endometriosis and selected tumours. Compared to traditional open surgery, it offers reduced pain, shorter hospital stays, minimal scarring and faster return to normal activities.

Beyond the clinical success, the operation signals Nigeria’s growing capability to deliver world-class medical services domestically, reducing reliance on foreign medical tourism.

For Adamawa State, the achievement is a point of pride, as Dr. Abdullahi’s accomplishment reflects the rise of homegrown medical excellence meeting global innovation.

As robotic surgery gains traction across Nigeria and the wider West African region, this landmark procedure is expected to mark the beginning of a new era in precision-driven, technology-powered healthcare delivery.
